The Cali Crushers are Going Co-Ed for the OCCA Summer League
SoCal Women’s Cricket Association is continuing to create opportunities for women to play cricket. Hot on the heels of our journey to the 11th Annual GWCA Tournament in Conyers, GA, where we finished 3rd out of 8 women’s cricket teams, we’ve officially registered as a team in the Orange County Cricket Association’s Summer League 2024.
Formed in 2007, the OCCA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that hosts a winter and summer T20 series open to anybody interested in cricket.
With no female-captained teams participating in the league thus far, we decided to break ground in our home area and facilitate weekly access to competitive cricket opportunities for local women.
With the growth of the SCWCA platform, the summer 2024 season seemed like the perfect time to register a women’s-first team in the OCCA.
For many of our local women players, this is the first and only opportunity to compete in leatherball cricket matches, so we’re using the season as a learning experience that will hone our team cricket IQ and prepare the Cali Crushers for future tournaments.
We hope this co-ed collaboration will be beneficial to all players in the OCCA cricket league, as it increases awareness of women’s cricket, demonstrates the need for more practice avenues for women players, and is sure to bolster the visibility of cricket in Southern California.
